For a lot of students, the idea of going to University can be scary, intimidating, and maybe even a bit lonely. Getting involved around campus can provide opportunities to try new things, and meet new people in the process. The first thing I did when I started at St. Mary’s University College was join the choir. I’ve always been a bit musically inclined, and it seemed like a good chance to ease my way into the school.

The choir at St. Mary’s was smaller than most I’d sung in. I was a musical introvert and the idea of people actually hearing me while I sung mortified me. However, it didn’t take me long to realize that this was the perfect place for me. The director really pulled me out of my shell, which helped me in more ways than one. The benefits of this also started to show in my other classes, where I started asking more questions and speaking up during discussions.

I recognize that choir isn’t for everyone, but the important thing is that you participate in something extra-curricular that interests you. St. Mary’s has academic clubs such as our writers’ guild, varsity and intramural sports, and many clubs and student initiatives. There is a lot to learn that can’t be taught in a classroom, and getting involved in Student Life programs is the quickest and easiest way to it. So no matter where you end up going, make sure you pursue something just for the fun of it.
